Glucobay activities raise awareness of cardiovascular risks at EASD 2007
The importance of reducing cardiovascular (CV) risk factors and postprandial hyperglycaemia– two major features of Glucobay – were key themes at this year’s 43rd Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 17–21 September 2007.

Bayer Schering Pharma held a successful satellite symposium titled ‘Transferring diabetes and CVD prevention into daily practice – time to act now!’ which included presentations from a faculty of diabetes experts led by Professor Rury Holman (UK). The event generated a lively discussion that reflected keen interest from the delegates, on how collaborations between diabetologists and cardiologists can improve care of dysglycaemic patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). The faculty and delegates agreed that new trials, such as the upcoming Acarbose Cardiovascular Evaluation (ACE), are urgently needed to investigate the potential CV benefits of oral antidiabetes drugs.

The Bayer HealthCare booth combined Bayer Schering Pharma’s information on Glucobay and Aspirin Cardio with Diabetes Care’s information on the Breeze and Contour blood glucose meters, under the umbrella: “Connecting innovative strategies in diabetes management”. The booth attracted many of the 14,000 delegates in the EASD exhibition hall with its open design. Key publications, E-detailing and an information pack to mark the launch of ACE all demonstrated Bayer’s commitment to diabetes management.

A further highlight of the EASD meeting, and a milestone for Glucobay, was the release of new diabetes management guidelines from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), which focus on managing postmeal glucose levels. Glucobay trials such as STOP-NIDDM featured highly among the evidence used to support the IDF’s recommendations. During a press conference, IDF past president Pierre Lefèvbre acknowledged that Bayer were the first to identify the importance of postmeal glucose levels 30 years ago, with the launch of Glucobay, but only now has such evidence been specifically addressed in international diabetes guidelines. The IDF recommends Glucobay as an effective treatment for controlling postmeal hyperglycaemia.

New Guidelines

The new ESC-EASD Guidelines on Diabetes, Prediabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases were presented at the implementation meeting in Nice end of June.
