Epidemic Extention
The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimated that, in 2003, approximately 314 million adults worldwide (8%) had IGT. This figure is projected to rise to 472 million by 2025 (9%), exceeding that predicted for type 2 diabetes at this time point (333 million). The prevalence of IGT is increasing in all regions across the world, with the exception of Africa, where the prevalence of this condition is predicted to remain fairly constant until 2025. Interestingly, in Africa and South-East Asia, the prevalence of IGT is more than twice that of diabetes.

IGT is more prevalent than IFG in many populations.
In 2003, the IDF estimated that 314 million adults worldwide (8.2%) had IGT, a form of prediabetes characterised by postprandial hyperglycaemia.
The prevalence of prediabetes is increasing around the world.
Approximately 472 million adults worldwide will have prediabetes by 2025.
Up to 50% of individuals with IGT will develop type 2 diabetes over 10 years.
Managing diabetes accounts for 5–10% of a nation's health budget, and the treatment of diabetes complications accounts for most of these costs.
